Re: 93 Explorer will not start <Need help finding starter

Can't tell you specifically where the starter is on your '93, but would expect it's on the driver's side on the engine just inside the driver's side front wheel. It has to make contact with the flywheel which is located between the engine and transmission, and the engine in your Explorer is longitudinal which would put the starter near the firewall.

As for the symptoms, typically a low battery will cause a series of clicks of the solenoid as it drops in and out due to low battery voltage. The voltage isn't able to hold the solenoid in. Since you are geting a single click, the voltage is sufficient to hold the solenoid in, but the starter is not engaging. I'd say with pretty high confidence the starter assembly is the issue in your case.

Yes it is on the driverside the bolts of it go through the tranny into the bellhousing, if the ground wasn't muddy I'd go out and take a pic a show ya.
