Transmission trouble

Hi Gang,
My 1980 El Camino started acting up for the first time since I bought it. Yesterday I reversed out of the driveway, put it into drive, and nothing happened. All shift positions responded like neutral. I shut it down, waited a minute, then cranked it up and it ran all day. Today the same thing happened, but reverse to drive was no problem. I made it to a stop light, then when the light changed I hit the gas and had the same problem. Once again all shift positions responded like neutral. I shut it down, fired it up a minute later, and it worked all day.

The car is an automatic with a 350 Edlebrock, lock up and mild stall, and until yesterday has run beautifully. Any advice will be very much appreciated.

Thank you,
Nick
