Stabilizer Bar Missing??

1989 Riviera. Recently replaced the front/driver caliper, as both the bolts that hold it on, had broken off, and that caused the loud clunking noise i kept hearing. During initial drive after replacing it, I heard a loud bang on expressway, at about 75mph, and saw a few metal pieces scattering behind me on the freeway, and thought nothing of it , as i thought they may have been the brake pads (i thought maybe I didnt tighten the caliper enough.

As I was driving home I noticed the car felt like "there was a strong wind blowing side to side", and I had a friend look at it, and was told it was a stabilizer link, or stabilizer bar (????) that was completely MISSING. was also told that a "stressful" right turn, could cause the wheel to come off.

I have noticed that there is alot of front-to-back play when you kick the tread part of the tire. took it to a mechanic who refused to work on it, OR elaborate on the problem, but told me that "somewhere" a 5/8 bolt hole, had hollowed itself out to over 1". I am trying to find out if there is something I can do to this thing to fix it, without having to replace the entire sub-frame.And maybe what EXACTLY the problem sounds like. He also told me not to drive it over 35 mph until the problem is resolved. please help!!!!

Without on site inspection or detailed pictures, this issue is nearly impossible to give you any meaningful advice.

I would talk to a body shop that does frame repairs. Explain the problem if they sound reasonable have the vehicle towed over. Most of them have deals with a towing company. Have a quote from your towing company for reference.

Re: Stabilizer Bar Missing??

ok, NOT the stabilizer bar. something to do with the cradle. I probably shoulda mentioned that the left tire rubs on the wheelwell when making a stressful left turn, and the power steering can be heard screeching on stressful enough turns as well.

If you can't fix it yourself with junkyard parts you have to go somewhere. Find a body shop you trust and get an estimate. The way it is you might blow a tire on one of these turns and cause a bad wreck. Sometimes its cheaper to repair than take a chance.
