straight 6 engine type?

I have a 1949 chevy 3600(3/4 ton) the engine is a staight six with overhead valves, which I'm fairly sure is not the original. I belive the 216 was the original engine which I thought was a flathead, but I could be wrong. someoney though it might be a 235 but I dont know. The only nubers I could find are on the passenger side of the crankcase behind the distributer they are B44 848 850
I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow but the valve cover is red with Chevrolet on it, the oil cap is in the center towards the firewall and there is a breather cap on the passenger side of the crankcase.
thanks

Re: straight 6 engine type?

Welcome to AF, what is the question, all Chevy 6's are overhead valve.

Re: straight 6 engine type?

I believe he is asking displacement.

Re: straight 6 engine type?

Yeah displacement and approximate era. I thought the old Chevy’s had flatheads would that be incorrect? If so then this might be the original but I'm not sure. I’ve got one picture right now then my camera batteries went dead I'll try to get some more tomorrow, but I'm not sure how to upload it

Re: straight 6 engine type?

The Flathead is a Ford product, I don't think Chevrolet ever made one.

Re: straight 6 engine type?

Ford did make a flat head 6, Chevy didn't, I believe the 235 was an original truck engine back then and the 216 was the car version.

Re: straight 6 engine type?

Ok I've found that the original engine was 216.5 CID in-line 6, so how can I tell if the current engine is the original or not, and if not how can I tell what type it is?

Re: straight 6 engine type?

While similar in appearance, 216 and 235 are quite different. 216 was available from '38 through '53 in trucks. 235 was first in trucks in '41, through '62. If you could post a pic of the intake/exhaust, and where the side cover bolts on. I should be able to identify it for you.

http://chevy.tocmp.com/models/engine.htm

If this doesn't help, I don't know what would. It may not get you to a "numbers matching" state but you'll at least be able to order the correct parts for your engine.

Re: straight 6 engine type?

i had a '53 6400 2 ton dump truck it was the 235 first year for hydraulic oiling in the top end

ran great

it was crazy to drive

two speed rear, a real dinosaur feel when driving it haha

is the oldest vehicle i have had so far

was in very nice straight condition too

paid 500 for it from a farmer out in the country, very minor rust only in one cab corner otherwise nice looking

dark blue original

i should have kept it, for parades and stuff hmm

haha

oh well

the 235 looked like any other ordinary straight six engine(L-6)

normal looking stamped steel valve cover as in the 60s and 70s and such,

flatheads in fords yeah, i had a 49 ford big 2 ton out here once but it wasnt mine

it had the flat head 6 in it still

very odd looking they are

my great uncle has a few very old tractors with flat head engines in them

i helped remove the cylinder head from one of them once
it got water in it and needs new cylinder sleeves

good luck!
