Just did a compression test on the talon

Well I just finished checking the compression on my talon and I was surprised. The compression was better in that near 180k mile car than it was in my eclipse.
cylinder 4 175 psi
cylinder 3 180 psi
cylinder 2 200 psi
cylinder 1 205 psi

Now I know N/A and turbo comression ratios are different, but should that matter with what kind of compression it puts out? I know my rings are done for in the talon cause it smokes, unless i put stop smoke or engine restore in, which i guess coats the cylinder walls and increases compression. Does it sound like I might need to look into that engine restore additive for the eclipse, in order to boost the compression numbers? Really so far thats the only problem I've encountered with the eclipse, and it still runs good, with no oil useage. Does anybody use oil additives with their turbos?

Re: Just did a compression test on the talon

I dont, usually oil addatives are very thick, not really want to want to be putting in a turbo car that relies on the oil to lube the turbo.

This compression test was for the 1.8? It doesn't look bad, not anything to worry about anyways.

How do you know for sure its the rings on the talon? Have you done a compression check on it yet.

Re: Just did a compression test on the talon

Yes that compression test was on the 1.8L. I'm not positive that it's the rings, but I guess it could be the valve seals. I just figured that because the engine was so old, it was most likely the rings. I didn't do a wet compression test.

I just know on the GSX the compression numbers were significantly lower a few months back when I tested it. They all went up to around 160 after doing a wet compression test, so that leads me to believe its probably the rings (GSX). The 1.8's compression was higher on the dry test than the GSX's wet test.

Good call on the oil additive, I wasn't going to do it with the turbo unless somebody else had good luck with it. I was just trying to think of an easy fix to boost up the numbers on the gsx without tearing into the internals.

Re: Just did a compression test on the talon

I would try tightening the head bolts near cylinder 3 and 4 see if that boosts your compression....

That compression doesn't look to bad. Do you want to keep the car? You know you don't get much performance out of the 1.8L.

Re: Just did a compression test on the talon

I think the 1.8 is more of a DD for him.

Yea I guess it about time to look at a rebuild for the talon. It appears your in the same boat as me. I think its time for a 6 bolt swap

Re: Just did a compression test on the talon

IIRC, wet compression tests on our cars are innaccurate because we don't have dome style pistons, so the oil just sits on the piston instead of "sealing" the rings.

Re: Just did a compression test on the talon

More oil FTW!! Add 1 quart per cylinder... That ought to up the compression... hehe

Re: Just did a compression test on the talon

Yeah the 1.8L is my reliable daily driver, I'm going to drive it until it blows up. I was just comparing the numbers with my GSX. It just seemed odd to me that, that old tired out engine had better compression numbers than my GSX. I was looking for a fix for the GSX rather than the 1.8. I might try your idea of tightening the head bolts though. Thanks for the advice

Haha, I don't think I'd waste my time doing a 6 bolt swap into the 1.8. But, if the GSX ever CW's (knock on wood) I'll be all over it.

Yea thats what I was talking about. Keep the 1.8 as the DD but put a 6-bolt in the 2g
