Jake brake?

Friend has 97 M-VIII - for 3 weeks, just after towing his boat, car is making noise one might liken to a jake brake - especially when cold. Acellerating no noise, but when back off throttle, sound like jake brake - and seems as though it gets worse as the tranny downshifts as speed decreases. What the heck is it?

Re: Jake brake?

I say it might be the exhaust manifold, when the metal is cold it retains its size, but when its hot it expands and it might close the little leak. With your hand follow the manifold without touching because it F****ing hot and feel the war air leaking out, of course when the car is on, remember than when a car has no muffler it rumbles pretty bad, so your problem its before the muffler.
