WIP: Revell Audi R10

Hi everyone, im pretty new here. Im a huge fan of the ALMS and Le Mans. I get to go to Laguna Seca every year for the last ALMS race (since 2003, its tradition). For the same amount of ive been building models, though only aircraft. Then I found the Revell C6R, so now ive been exploring into the world of cars. Thats how I came across this kit. I found it in July, and it finally came out in Auguest. Havent started uintl recent, because I wanted to finish the Corvette frist, but ive been stuck at the body spraying for a while and decided to start on my Audi.

I made sure to order the photo etchs from Studio 27 and Dexter. Comparing the two, there are a few parts that are very similar (air vents and seat belt), so I get to pick the better of the two. First glance of the kit was very nice. Being a HUGE fan of the R8, I was glad to see that so much of the "old car" come out in the R10 in 2006, and it was cool to see that im my own hands. It was a major dissapointment to find that the rear engine cover did not fit well with the rest of the car. Ill find a way to fix it later on. Some poor surface issues of left over molding, but other than that, looks like a fun build. Having limited experiance and never doing a car model or using photo etches, ive been proud with the progress made each day. Having an extremely low budget (teenager in college), I have to compensate for certain things

Like I said, small budget! This is my workspace, very small, as you can see the corvette is still there.

I just love this shape

A look through where the louvers will go

The photo etches added on to the engine

The engine test fit, oddly too far forward from the tub. How do I fix that?

Re: WIP: Revell Audi R10

Awesome! Keep it up. Are you going to clean up the holes where the louvers will go? Don't forget to clean up the mold lines, they seemed to be on every single part.

Now are you JTninja, or JTninja's Son? It gets confusing with you guys over on the ALMS forum. Maybe we can get Hugewally on here...

Re: WIP: Revell Audi R10

Lol, actually Im the same guy. When I first joined the ALMS forums, I was JETninjas Oldest Son, my dad being JETninja. Over time Ive slowly became JTninja. So im JETs son, JT I find it funny Ive confuesed you on this forum, the ALMS forum, and the enduracers forum lol.

Ill post updated pictures, Im nearly done with the louver holes, Im made them at the correct size, just working on the fitting process. Im finishing the engine, trying to match the paint with how it was in 2007 (used these pics from Lime Rock and Le Mans http://www.supercars.net/Gallery?cmd...ID=3335&pgID=1 )

Question, for anyone whos done the wings. For the Studio 27 photoetch it says to cut off the original wing, and replace it with theirs. Do i need to sand down the edges of the wings plates, or do I have to create holes to put them in (like the original peice)? Ill post pictures to explain.

Re: WIP: Revell Audi R10

LOL, thats my boy! (Zurbert, bet you didn't expect to see me here too! )

I grew up building hundreds of models in the 60's / 70's. Built all those Big Harley models, the Visible V8, tons of hotrods and drag cars. Not built anything in years (room and little kids...and now a Cat!) I do have many kits awaiting me...

Some that come to mind...

1/20th Tamiya F189 (will build as Mansell a fav of mine back then)
1/12th (IIRC) Honda CBX (used to own one)
1/36th or 1/24th (forget, started) Revell (?) F15C (will build as Israel A/C, first to shoot down enemy A/C)
1/24th Dragon '95 M3 Lightweight (I own a '95 M3)

...and some others. This site has certainly given me a lot of insperation! Need more kits! LOL!

Re: WIP: Revell Audi R10

Hes forgetting the 1/25 Revell C5R

Okay, heres an updated picture of where the louvers are being replaced. Just when I thought fitting it would be a pain, now I get to do the individual louvers, all at a 45 degree angle, too much and they'll stick outside the side skirts, dont want that.

And heres the inside slowing showing color. Im using Tamiyas Gun Metal in replace of Carbon Fiber, since I dont have the $$$ to get the CF decals It works better than I thought.

And heres my problem, what do I do about the wings?

Studio 27 instructions

Re: WIP: Revell Audi R10

Well, due to the weather, progress has been stalled to a near hault. Garage gets too cold to paint now

But great news, my decals arrived yesterday! I can offically announce my car will be the #38 Champion Racing Audi R10 TDI! I have been waiting since 2005 for this livery to be on this car, but since Champion joined with Audi Sport North America, we've been stuck with the silver cars....until now! Once this is finished, I will take it to Laguna Seca, and have Dave Maraj sign it and try to convince him to change the colors of his car

Big thanks to Milan Tomasek, he had not only made the decals, but made them from 1/32 to 1/24 for my creation!

Re: WIP: Revell Audi R10

I believe that part of the answer for the p/e quandry is that the outside plate indentions are for aditional layers. I knowtest these on the bottom right of the second picture and later knowtest are stated in the instructions. For the actual air foil things i guess u just have to guess and try to align it with the marks on the outside.

Studio 27 instructions
Use the original Revell plastic endplate as a template by drilling all the way through the existing alignment holes and then spot them on the S27 PE part. Even though the PE part is wicked thin, you might be able to spot the holes off on the PE endplate and then knock down the alignment pins on the wing so that they at least register in the correct position even if they aren't providing a secure perch. Then use CA glue to affix the wing. Haven't gotten to this point myself (when will that happen??) but that's somewhat of a quandry. So my advice is best guess having seen this issue here the first time. Perhaps someone else has already worked through this?

So what was the deal with the engine being so far away from the rear tub bulkhead?

Re: WIP: Revell Audi R10

Wow, of all the people to respond to this post, never thought one of them would be MulsanneMike!

I agree about the wing, I guess the supports need to go on first before the wings. Ill try that within the next couple of days.

As for the engine and its position, I have no idea. I often use the pictures on your site for detail and such, but none of the pictures explain this problem!

Re: WIP: Revell Audi R10

Okay, so the engine is more than one problem. Another issue is putting the engine cover over the engine itself, it doesnt fit, making the cover sit too high and not properly on. Im now sanding down the inside of the cover so it can fit properly without the engine pushing it up. As for the engine sitting too far back, I believe that there are resin parts availible to help fix it.

Has anyone got the new KA models R10 detail kit? According to Strada it has 2 Photoetches, 9 resin parts, and a metal sticker and film. Judging by the pics, the 2 radiators are included. I ordered mine a few days ago...expensive, but I think its worth it.

I'd say there's something fundamentally wrong then. Is there confirmation from anyone else that this is a common problem?

When you get your KA Model's detail kit, snap some photos of what it contains and post them here.

Re: WIP: Revell Audi R10

yes, I got the Ka models kit, and I must say its awesome, its like the Dexter and S27 PE rolled into one.

the resin pieces are very good quality

and yes, the engine is off by by quite abit. I've been thinking I may cut the trans off the block and extend the engine, but that would mean I'll also have to extend the exaust pipes too

Re: WIP: Revell Audi R10

Yep, my KA set arrived today! OMG, its insane! Its pretty much the two others comebind, plus more! 4 photo etches for the brake, plus a resign peice for the caliber. The rear wing is really nice, its like the Studio 27 part, only more detailed. Im taking pictures right now. IMO, well worth the $35 I paid for them.

Sorry, my camera is having issues, so the pics are not in good quality...
