Site Search Turned Up Little !
Hello All,
I have spent quite some time searching for answers but found little that I believe applied to my 93 Sport 4.0 HO. It has been running like new until yesterday, It has dropped spark. I Have read the "No Start XJ" sticky post 3 times and other check/test procedures. From what I've gathered my 93 is not a Renix system ??? I found a test for the CPS that stated to put test leads on wires B and C. Well, There are NO letters on either side of the connector plug stating which is which. For that reason I went and got a new CSP and installed it, Still no start.....I didn't check for spark (No key spinner) today, I also didn't have time to check for flooding (fouled) plugs. I figured if it had flooded with the three times I tried to start it yesterday they would have dried out by this afternoon. I also un-plugged and re-plugged every connector under the hood with no change. I have already priced EVERY part in this ignition system but I hate to just throw parts at anything. Can anyone help with where I need to go next or know where to find proper diagnostics of this system ? Sorry for the long thread, Wanted to get all the facts on the table. Any HELP would be appreciated !!! Thanks.....

Long??? Sheeoot! Bring it bro! It's about time I say!
No, '93 is not a renix from what little I gather on the subject. ('98 myself) So, what do you have going on exactly? Does she crank at all? You said, "It has dropped spark" and, "I didn't check for spark (No key spinner) today," ~ what is "(No key spinner)"??? We're here to help bro... Oh, and ~Good Luck! |

Re: Site Search Turned Up Little !
Sorry citizen,
I got in it, It cranked over but would not start. I had someone home at the time to "spin the key" (crank the engine over) so I could check for spark with a screw driver inserted in the coil wire held about .40" from a steel grounding point. I found no spark while cranking over. That's when I got on here and started my search. I had no one home after replacing the CPS to crank the engine over so I could re-check for spark to make sure it wasn't flooded, But as I stated I believe it would have dried out with the time laps of 20 hrs. since I first tried to crank it. Now I'm to the point that I'm un-sure of where to go next since I couldn't find test procedures/specs on this ignition system. THANKS for your reply....

Re: Site Search Turned Up Little !
Check for spark on the ignition coil wire coming from the coil to the center of the distributor, if there's no spark there then it's likely the coil has gone out. If there is spark there then open the distributor and check the contacts in the cap and the rotor button as one of them could be bad.

Re: Site Search Turned Up Little !
Try checking the How to section on Autozone.com. It has location and testing procedures. If you have spark after replacing the CPS then I would check for a bad stator (pickup coil) inside the distributor.
This could also cause the problem you described. |

Re: Site Search Turned Up Little !
I checked for spark on the coil wire un-plugged from the distributor cap holding it near a steel grounding point on the engine.
I still had no spark after replacing the CPS, I did find the test specs. on the AutoZone site wildman thanks ! I did find that I am getting a pulsing battery voltage to the primary input side of the coil from the harness plug while cranking the engine over. I then removed the coil (couldn't get test leads on the primary side) and performed both primary and secondary resistance test, Primary showed a couple ohms higher and secondary showed a couple hundred ohms lower resistance than spec. I also noticed pitting and what looked like spots of carbon on the secondary out-put post, I read that this alone could cause the coil to go bad. I will pick up a new coil and plug wire set tomorrow and throw them on and see what happens, The cap and rotor was put on 5,000 miles back and still look like new. Thanks Everyone....

Re: Site Search Turned Up Little !
OK Everyone, Put the new coil in and it fired RIGHT up
Something I noticed right off the bat though is it DID start right NOW. I bought this Jeep back in March of this year from my sister's good friend, They had it all tuned up and fully serviced and checked out before I got there because I had to drive it back home 347 miles. The first thing I noticed when I cranked it the first time is I had to stay in the starter and the engine would spin over 8 or so times before it would fire off, I figured that's just the way these things started because a co-worker has one that starts this same way. With the new CPS that did not solve the no start problem and the new coil I can't get off the key quick enough before it starts !!! My last question is this; In your opinion do you think the hard starting was a result of the CPS or the coil being weak and finally giving out ? THANKS Citizen, Dave and Wildman for your input to my problem....
