Thumbs up NSS cleaning

This is just a quick note to let everyone know you do not have to disconnect the NSS to clean it. I have a 90 Cherokee 4X4 that has never had backup lights. I researched the cause and decided to follow instructions and clean the NSS. All the instructions I read had me taking the component completely out of the Jeep. After trying to cut the zip ties on the wires I could not get them all so I disconnected the negative side of the battery and proceeded to take the NSS off the trans. I dropped it down and took it apart under the Jeep and cleaned the contacts and inside the switch. Put it all back in and I had backup lights. The switch also functions properly on all other shift positions. Just thought I would throw this out there because I wasted about 45 minutes to an hour just trying to get the switch disconnected when I did not need to do that. Just a thought for someone else. Now I will preface it with the fact that you just need to be very careful that the contacts don't "pop" out, but other than that it was smooth sailing.

Re: NSS cleaning

See! That's what I'm saying right there gals/fellas.

I was under the other rig not two days ago, and was trying to figure out this very trick. I love/hate zip ties.

Thanks for the tip gasman1. I'll be trying this on my next weekend. (thurs-sat) Weather permitting.

Hell, I might even take pics...

Ha!

Re: NSS cleaning

To get the zip tie off, I think I used one of those 16 inch long nose pliers and twisted it off.

Gasman: Did you have to work laying down or did you have a lift?

Re: NSS cleaning

Boy I wish I had a lift. No I had to jack up the left front as high as my jackstand would allow and then I had to get rid of the creeper because that did not allow enough room so I just put some cardboard on the ole garage floor and went after it. I will have to say with the way the exhaust and one of the fluid lines comes right by that direction the biggest problem I had was positioning my light to where I could see the nut to loosen. I think once I understood what was coming off and what was not I did better. Just for clarity, maybe everyone already knows this but the smaller (12mm) bolt comes all the way out in order to remove the NSS. I was not clear on that point so I kept trying to inch it off but until I realized that bolt comes all the way out I did not get very far. If and when I do it again I will take the large nut off first and then take the smaller bolt out and then the unit will slide off the rod as it is supposed to.
