power locks going insane
Wife tells me the locks are clicking on her van. I take it for a spin and she's right, they repeatedly lock while going over bumps and braking. I'm suspecting a broken/chaffing wire somewhere but also wonder if it's a failure withg the control module or whatever makes these things work. It's an '02 and locks itself when you put it in drive. Any suggestions?

Re: power locks going insane
Power locks use two relays, (under the driver side of the dash) one for lock, one for unlock. Check your owners manual for instructions on how to program the locks. There's some funky combination using the wiper or cruise switch, standing on one foot, closing one eye and clicking your heels a certain number of times, I can't recall exactly. There are several choices, the one you have now, plus 3 or 4 more possibilities. Re-program them the way you like, then see if they still act up and post your results... have fun

Re: power locks going insane
well, they were working fine for 3-4 months, I think it's a recently developed problem and not a programing issue.
I've done the one foot hop on other vehicles before, thanks for the tip! |

Re: power locks going insane
I'd wiggle the wiring harness inside the rubber boot in the door jam- next to the door hinges- start with driver's door- (most used door) - the wire tend to break or chaff in this area- also tap on your relay box, door panels etc to see where the problem lies......

Re: power locks going insane
well, I gave the drivers door harness a good workout, no results. I pulled the cig-lighter fuse, which made the power locks not work with the switches, but they still freak out when you drive around.

Re: power locks going insane
You might need to call the Ghost Busters!
You will probably need to go through all of the wiring for the locking system. Start with the simplest, that is usually where problems are, on the driver door, remove the rubber boot - since wiggling the harness did not help - see if any wire damage exists, then the passenger door rubber. If no damage found, you will need to go to the relays check wiring there and work your way to the actual switch in the door. I had an issue on another vehicle where the switch itself became faulty, my case was mostly from my 4 year old exploring the workings of the switch. |

Re: power locks going insane
I originally suspected a switch, but the switches don't work with the fuse pulled. I need to find out how the system gets power, theres apparently another source other than the cig lighter fuse. I'll go find a schematic...
