Rear Main Leak?

Looks like some sort of miniscule oil leak in that area. I searched the forums and found an exact similar issue, but didn't have a lot of answers on it.

Same picture from the other post.

What's the best (i.e. simplest, lol) way to find out where the leak is coming from? It is definitely an oil leak. I've had the tranny rebuilt a year ago (factory defect sun gear shell) and I know they did a pretty good job on it, was there as they reinstalled it and saw them clean up and re-seal that area.

Have a 2WD, 2000 Blazer, 4 door. I'm not looking to put a lot of money into it since it has been that way for years and has not caused any problems. That and I don't have a lot of money, lol.

I do have access to a full body lift and a shop with tools and equipment and mechanic advisors on site. I don't have a lot of experience, but I've done most work on my own vehicles via random fumblings, chilton manuals, alldatadiy, and many painful cuts and mashed fingers

Any advice is welcome

Re: Rear Main Leak?

This could be a couple things. Yes, it could very well be the rear main seal, as they can leak with age. It could also be the rear part of the oil pan. As the gasket gets old, it starts to get brittle and loose its sealing ability and leak. To be able to get a better idea, open the weap hole, clean it up with brake cleaner, let it dry and watch for the leak. It the oil is coming from above the oil pan gasket, its most likly your rear main oil seal. If there is no oil above the oil pan gasket, its only below, it the oil pan gasket.

Re: Rear Main Leak?

Ok, will do, thanks for the info. BTW, this has been going on (I NOTICED it) when the vehicle was about 2 years old, so it may not be an age issue.
