Automatic transmission gear ratios
Are the gear ratios the same in the auto trans from an 89-94 3 cylinder and a 95-98 4 cylinder. I was told they could interchange.

As far as I know all the metros have the same automatic.

Well something must be different, rather it be as miniscule as the speedometer gear or as profound as an entirely different gearset, in order to account for the difference in tire sizes between the earlier and later metros, right?

Well, yes that's a good point. Any difference is probably very minor. I do know that they changed the valve body gasket design somewhere in the mid 90s as well as the separator plate I believe. However, I thought that was all they changed but I forgot about the 12" tires. Since the speedo does not use the VSS they may have just changed the no of teeth in the speedo driven gear. But as far as I know there are no major differences.
The contorl of course (TCM) has changed a lot over the years. |
