I can not turn the ignition key

The steering wheel will not lock into a position so that the key will turn. the gear shift is in park, and we made sure we pressed the brake. Any ideas? Thank You

Re: I can not turn the ignition key

If someone turned the engine off while holding the steering wheel 'turned' - it might be necessary to turn the wheel a little to 'unload' the locking mechanism between the steering shaft and the ignition key. For instance, If the wheels were turned to the right as the engine was stopped - it would mean turning the wheel to the right a couple of degrees more.
