turbo/super gocart

hey my friend has a little 6 hp moped and wants to make it faster, do you think he could turbo or super it, which one would be better in this case? and where would you get a turbo/super for a like 45cc engine

Re: turbo/super gocart

i'd say go for whatever you can find. i don't think selection is going to be very big for something that size. if you have the choice i'd probably go with supercharger just because it's easier to tune with carburators

Re: turbo/super gocart

I dont know where you're going to find a supercharger for a 6hp Briggs, but it wouldnt be too tough to get a turbo setup to work on it. You aren't going to need an intercooler. Just snag a small (gt12 or equiv) internally gated turbo, build a manifold, hook up appropriate piping, and tune the carb on it...try to find the tiniest turbo you can because a 6hp engine doesn't have a lot of exhaust energy.

Re: turbo/super gocart

its quite popular to use 70's and 80's automotive emission air pumps on little motors like that as a super charger. Works well. Just run a belt off the crank. Can pick up the air pumps for nothing at junk yards

you're not going to find a properly sized turbo for something that small. Not even close

Re: turbo/super gocart

lol really,
at that engine size (3.3cc) it would make more sense to me to simply go to a bigger engine.
just my

acutally, ive heard of people using 50 shots of nitrous on small engines and having them survive for a very long time.
a ricer friend of mine put a 100 shot of nitrous on a lawnmower cause he was pissed at it and wanted it to die...
he emptied the tank and the lawnmower survived

thats pretty much always the case. Bigger engines (assuming the weight/room are availible) is a better option assuming you can afford it.

But.....with the 45cc engine, a $20 air pump from the junk yard and some very minor fabrication....it would be unique if nothing else

Re: turbo/super gocart

actually, as i think about it more, a turbo from a japanese kei car would work perfectly if you could find one.
daihatsu makes a tiny van like car and its turboed.

I assume you're refering to the IHI RHB32 turbo that they put on the 1.0L 3 cylinders. They used the same turbo on the Suzuki Swift's

About 5 times too big for this application IMO. It might spool, but it would be a lot less effective than the emissions air pump idea.

That tiny turbo was good to 80-100hp. On a 6hp engine, it would be like trying to spin a windmill by blow through a straw

Re: turbo/super gocart

the hardest part about riding a moped is telling your parents you're gay (taken from a member's sig, can't remember who's)

by the way, i made a thread about this about 4 years ago and long story short this is the only really useful link i got:

http://www.hscsupercharger.com/

they make superchargers for 5-20hp engines.

$1000?? I'll take the $20 air pump

it'll be less efficient, but then, you can buy a really nice engine for $1000
