phantom gauges
on a 2000 2.2 chevy cav every now and then the gauges will act as they are shutting down and resetting. so she will be driving it down the road, and the the warning lights come on the gauges go down to zero and then they it goes back to normal. she said its like, if she just turned the key off and then back on. does anyone have any ideas what could do this, and what gets me is it is so random. it will happen one day, then two weeks later it will do it again. thank you

Loose battery cables can cause that. Could also be a bad ground for the instrument cluster.

I own a 2003 Cav coupe with the same exact issues... So far my car has been to four different shops. The first one had no earthly idea, the second stated they got a code from the computer (U1064), the third stated it was the BCM(Body Control Module), and finally, the dealer stated it was a faulty instrument cluster. Well, on the dealer's recommendation a brand new instrument cluster was installed. This did not solve the problem. Now the dealer is saying that the problem is really the PCM... Can someone please tell me if they have successfully fixed the issue with the cluster "resetting" as you are driving down the road, and if so HOW?! Thanks!

looking a the elec. diagram for instrument cluster a few thoughts: 10 amp cluster fuse hot at all times orange wire. clean and check plugins at panel.....another 10 amp fuse,hot in off or run (ign) wire pink cls/pcm check fuse prongs and ports for corrosion and loose fit. These two 10 amp fuses are located at the fuse block. probly in engine compartment.
There is something called logic ground the wire is blk. and white that runs to ground from microprocessor in cluster.(from what I see this is the main ground for inst. cluster) the fuel level sender from tank also ties in with this blk and wht wire from tank to ground for classic dude (GND) theroy.the only other ground that ties with the cluster is ignition switch (blk wire) and there are 2 other grounds used by sensor equipment to cluster processor........park brake switch, and brake fluid level switch. from pg 12-19 Haynes repair manual...... instument and engine warning system..................good luck elec. is always a pain
