Loud HISS when starting car
i have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1 v6. When i turn the ignition and start the car on a cold day the car willl make a super loud HISSing noise when it starts up then it goes away. I thought it might be the starter not disangaging from the flexplate fast enough when the engine starts, mabey....mabey not, if anyone has ever heard of this problem and knows the solution i would like to know if im right, thanks

Is it more of an "air releasing" sounding hiss, or a metallic, chirpy hiss?

sounds like the noise I had with my lumina with a 3100. It seemd to do it a lot worse when cold. Couldnt figure it out. I drove it for years like that. One thing I suspected was maybe an air pump system. Does you car have an air pump?

no...i know its wiered as hell, it has no affect with how the car runs or how long it takes to start it fires right up. Thats why the only thing i could think of was the starter

I thought it was the starter too. Funny thing was, sometimes when I started my car and it made a hiss, it wouldnt even start, and even with the motor not running, it hissed. Sound like your issue?

haha no, my car will hiss but it always starts, another thing that makes it even more strange is when i "prime" the engine it wont make the noise usually. I turn the ignition three times till the pump stops runnin, then start the car and it fires right up alot better without the HISS

yeah, were are talking about two different issues here then. Mine was so wierd, If i waited for the pump to prime, in cold weather it would most defenatly make the hiss sound. Although if i just got in and turned the key to start it, most of the time it wouldn't. Very strange, but I never did get around to taking the starter out and looking at the flexplate or starter drive for wear. I huess I suspected dried up grease in the starter not allowing it to disenguage fast enough especially in cold weather.
