sending laptop in for repairs....suggestions?

I have to send my laptop back to HP for repair. I was wondering what I should do before I send it in. I'm not sure at this time how long it will be gone for, but in any case I need some help. Are there things that I should remove/backup? I don't have any financial information on here (that I know of) I just have all my cd's ripped onto it, several photos, and a few programs. I'm thinking of burning all the photos onto a cd for the time being, just incase. I think I'll just let the music go with it as I have all of them in cases at home (is there any reason I should remove it?). Should I delete any temp files, run any scans, etc? Anyone have any other suggestions for things I should do before I send it off? THANKS!!!

I would back up anything you consider important as they can wipe the drive. There is no guarantee. I would also remove anything illegal for your own sake.

Re: sending laptop in for repairs....suggestions?

i'm going to save all my music and photos onto DVDs so that they're safe. What about this "illegal" stuff? I don't think I have anything illegal on my system, but what is that referring to?

Music/Movies/Software that are not owned by you. I would think everybody has something that applies to the term "illegal" on their computer nowadays, and if they don't...they must have very limited use of the internet.

Re: sending laptop in for repairs....suggestions?

So backup that forbidden porn , music, movies, software, and anything from a p2p or torrent site pretty much just to be safe. Somethings are free given with permission but why chance it when not everything else is.

For me, I'd take off all my music, photos, and programs just to be safe then wipe the memory myself so I know where I stand. By programs, I mean anything you even downloaded from download.com. I'd hate to go back and find where I got it or at least you got it when it was free and now they charge like some.

Music can be an issue even if it was from Napster bakck when it was free, why risk it. Gov't may just be bored or the record companies could be. Programs like Photoshop you got for free or Mircrosoft Office from a disk used more than once. Anything like that...um...photos really.

Re: sending laptop in for repairs....suggestions?

thanks for the replies. I was talking with someone today and they said I should be careful because HP is notorious for charging fees if they have to do any work on the computer. I will be highly pissed off if I get it back with a bill. They told me it would be free, but I do not know. Anyone ever encountered this?

When it comes to warranties and service, you get what you pay for. Everybody wants a laptop for under $300 bucks but you pay for it one way or another.

Bingo!

Cheap and inexpensive are two different things. You can pay now or you can pay later but one way or another you're going to pay. I prefer to par now.

Re: sending laptop in for repairs....suggestions?

Well I sent my laptop off for repair Monday afternoon and I had it back in my lap on Thursday morning, in working order. No charge. Finally I am somewhat more satisfied with HP. Thanks to all for your responses!!

Re: sending laptop in for repairs....suggestions?

If I remember correctly it was sent to Tennessee and I'm in Illinois...so it wasn't that far. I was impressed with the speed. It's been a couple of months and so far, so good.

Re: sending laptop in for repairs....suggestions?

I had to send my old Dell Laptop in twice, both times I had it back two days after I sent it. They sent someone to my house with a laptop box to pick it up (Fedex the first time, DHL the second). The first time I sent it off on Tuesday, and got it back Thursday morning. The next time I think was Wednesday and friday. Basically, they got it in the morning, fixed it immediately and mailed it the same afternoon.

Both times, I removed the hard drive before sending it.
