escort revs high

hi, my escort revs too high when starting, revs to 2000, comes down , goes back up to 2000, takes an age to regulate itself,, worse in summer when i should,nt even need choke at start, anyone any ideas, thanks RICH

You dont say what year your car is. If it is like the Escorts in the U.S.A., there could be a leak in the PCV valve line near the intake manifold, or some other vacuum line, letting in more air than it should normally get. It could be a sticking Idle Air Control Valve, or possibly a bad Throttle Position Switch. If your car is about ten years old or older, either one of these is likely to be failing. There isnt a 'choke' on the engine. The brain (PCM) decides how much to open the Idle Air Control Valve and how long to pulse the injectors; based on the coolant temperature, the air inlet temperature, the throttle position, and the mass air flow sensor.
On mine there is a large rubber duct running from the air filter housing, up to the throttle body. If there is any crack or air leak in that rubber duct, it will mess up the starting and idling. If I pull that duct even a little bit loose on my car, it stops running immediately.
