Re: no reverse

Generally when a Saturn transmission loses reverse totally, a procedure to replace the input shaft nut and tighten to specs is required.

It is possible for DIYers to complete it however it requires opening the driver's side end of the transmission. On a scale of 10 for degree of difficulty, 8 would be a fair score since it requires torquing the nut to specs with a thin walled socket not easy to come by.

Re: no reverse

Before you lost reverse was there slamming in reverse or a delay before reverse engages? The input shaft usually only affects foward gears. I would put my money on the valve body. The forum he has a link to is a wonderful resource for Saturn owners. I replaced my valve body last week in 2 hours w/ very little cussing. I had reverse slam and slamming in foward gears. Luckily I changed the VB before the input shaft could loosen.

Re: no reverse

actually on a scale one 1 to ten the input shaft nut is near a 3. lowering of the cradel about an inch is needed to get the cover off. 23mm socket is needed for the input shaft nut and torqued to 110 ft/lbs. any 23mm socket will due just some grinding is needed. a c-clamp is used to hold the input shaft from turning. you need to buy a new input shaft nut and CANNOT just retighten the existing one. its about 6 bucks at the dealer.

the valve body isjust as easy. if you can change your oil and filter you can do the valve body. i can refer you to instuctions for each if you need them.

before you go crazy tho, put some seafoam tranny cleaner in the tranny. back the car up to a tree for 20 min keeping it in reverse. after, change the fluid and filter. then go from there
