95 town car transmission problem

Hey guys having little trouble and see if you guys could guide me in the right direction. Have a 95 tc signiture series and tranny was going bad so had it rebuilt. Me and my dad took the tranny out and put it back in. All lines look hooked up and all the elctronic sensors are hooked up, but now the problem arises. When i put it in reverse the reverse lights come on, but i have no torque or anything in the engine, if i put it in neutral the reverse lights stay on, when i go down to drive the lights go off but still no torque as if the car was in neutral. If i turn the car off in park and try to restart it many times it wont turn over like as if it where trying to start in gear, and then i have to cycle through the gears and fight where it will start. Not a transmission buff and thinking the gear shift maybe bad but no idea. Anyone have any ideas where to start?

IMO; it sounds like the Shift linkage isn't connected properly. Also, I've heard the torque converter should be replaced when the tranny goes out.

Does it have ATF?

The torque converter was replaced brand new. It has i believe 8-10 quarts of atf fluid in there. I looked at the linkage but i dont know exactly how it is supposed to be hooked up. i did notice the it seems like it has a white clip on it where it slides into a bracket and sometimes pops out which seems like a problem but still not sure why no power

Re: 95 town car transmission problem

Hello, I just replaced ym tranny in mine about a year ago. You need around 13 quarts of fluid. And I agree with TOWNCAR that the shift module can go bad. As a matter of fact, the modules can go bad, causing the torque converter to go out and then it will burn up the trans as well like in my case.. 80 Bucks from the dealership for hte shift module...

Re: 95 town car transmission problem

Car has 12 quarts of atf in it now. Jerked a little forward after adding it. My biggest worry is since the tranny was just rebuilt something inside is not right. I had to put in in Drive to start it and in Reverse and Nuetral the reverse lights stayed on. thinking just the linkage??

Re: 95 town car transmission problem

Get the 1995 FSM off my webpage... it'll help you run pinpoint tests and show the correct connect and adjustment process for the linkage.

There's some transmission folks over at LoL that might be able to give you more direct answers.
