Looking for reviews

On this:http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/st...P2167:CL160403
I have been considering something like this for the past few months as I start to do more with my computer ( going to be hooking up my scanner to scan lots of photos and slides, etc.) I was not planning on getting one until early next year when I came across this in my email box this morning. I have been pricing them the past few months to get an idea, but I've never heard of this company. I looked online for reviews but did not find any. Has anyone had experience with this brand/company , or any of their other products? While researching online I've found this item to cost from $140 to $229, so the advertised price (with rebate included) seems to be very good at $89.98 w/ free shipping. Thank you in advance for any input you can offer.

I never heard of that brand before either, but that is a damn good price... I don't see why it wouldn't be worth a shot at least. Check into whether or not they offer a warranty with it. If so, I would definitely at least consider it a possibility.

Re: Looking for reviews

There is a one year warranty on it. One site I did see that talked about it,(not really a review, mentioned the one year warranty and that other brands offer up to a 3 year warranty. They also said that those that offer a longer warranty (closer to 3 years,) were also over $200 in price. So I'm to guess by those statements you can pay more for another brand with a longer warranty, or "gamble" on this one with a one year, and paying a lot less for the item.

Re: Looking for reviews

I recommend namebrand external hard disks, such as LaCie or Maxtor.

If you want an external drive on the cheap, buy a hard disk that has a reasonable warranty on it (~3 yrs) and get an external encolsure for it.

If you're after portability, get a 2.5" laptop enclosure and a 160gb 2.5" 5400rpm laptop drive.

Re: Looking for reviews

Yeah, but one 5 star review. By an employee perhaps? By the marketing department?

Did it say how long he had owned it for? Or any experience dealing with returns or warranty dept.?

I think it's a bit short sighted to trust a single 5 star review by someone on the internet on a website you find on Google.

You're right, negative reviews are often more telling than postive reviews on new products as out box and early failures, technical support problems and return issues are more likely to get posted than positive reviews, and on a commodity like this the lack of reviews can sometimes be seen be seen as a good sign. Amazon lists how long the product has been available and has a link to simular products by the same manufacturer so you can check out other reviews and get an idea of the reliability of their products and support.
