Ignition timing question

Hi,

I have a 1996 Nissan Altima with 2.4 L engine. Currently, I'm trying to adjust the ignition timing. I bought an inductive timing light. And knew that I should aim it at the crankshaft pulley between the alternator and the firewall.

The procedure seems very easy to follow. However, I realized that the distance between the timing mark on the pulley and the stationary timing pointer is very large. Consequently, you can get very different readings, if you read the timing from different angles.

Am I wrong?
