IAC screw woes

So I've been trying to narrow down a sputtering/hard start problem with my 02 Grand Prix 3.8. I replaced the fuel filter, belt, and PCV valve, and still, I have problems with it.

When I turn the ignition over to start, I wait for the whine of the fuel pump, then I have to wait 5-6 seconds to get the car to start. I have to pump the gas, and once the car is started, I smell gas. I know this is also wearing on my starter.

I found this forum, and based on other threads, I started by unplugging the MAF sensor. The car started right up, no problems. Intermittent surges, but I assumed that that was the engine compensating for the lack of MAF info.

I decided to take off and clean the IAC valve with Chemtool. It came out clean as a whistle, but there's one problem. The first Torx T20 that I tried to take out broke off, leaving the majority of the bolt behind. It looked to be threadlocked into place (pinkish-red material on the threads of the other bolt) so I guess it's safe to assume that 1. the material used on the screw is hard but brittle, and 2. I need some sort of screw retrieval kit to get the damn thing out.

Help! Thanks.

Re: IAC screw woes

you might want to try posting this in the main grand prix forum, not the tips and maintenance section.

Why did you suspect the IAC? If when the maf is unplugged and your symptoms go away, the MAF is the problem.

Re: IAC screw woes

Thanks for the heads up Tim. This thread has been moved to the regular Grand Prix forum. Tips & Maintenance is intended for tips, FAQS and maintenance procedures. Future cooperation is appreciated.

Re: IAC screw woes

Welcome to AF

Are you saying that one of the IAC retaining bolts broke off and is still in the throttle body? If so, since they are so small, it's going to be difficult to drill to use an easy-out or screw extractor for removal. I'll assume since you read that the IAC is another known issue, you removed it as "maintenance" since it looked easy to do, and I don't blame you for that. It sucks when a supposedly simple job turns into a nightmare!!
