Smile Check Engine Light No Codes

My nephew has a 1996 GC 4.0L engine. The CEL is on but no codes are being store or in pending. AutoZone scanned Key On/Offx3. Then he came to me I scanned it with my Sunpro Scanner. No code but light is on. He's mother (My Step-sister) is not talking to me and prohibiting me to really look at problem.

I'm betting there is a bad electrical connection to PCM. Nephews friend put in an After market Stereo and I am betting he nicked a wire some where.

Just really want other peoples thoughts. I know they can't afford to pay another mschanic look at it and my dad and step mother will probably end up paying somebody else to repair.

Re: Check Engine Light No Codes

Did you try to bring up codes via speedo?

Re: Check Engine Light No Codes

In that case you might be on the right track about the radio install. There is a two wire data-bus plug (white and purple wires) that plugs into the back of the stock radio, I would check those out to make sure that no one wired anything to them.

Exclamation Re: Check Engine Light No Codes

Follow up for everybody. They put a new gas cap on cleared the check engine light. Drove for 50 miles. It passed emmission inspection. Even though there was no evap leak code. This seem to have solved the problem.

Fingers crossed. Thanks for all the imput.
