91 jetta needs to be timed

how would u time a 91 jetta with the stock 1.8 manual

Assuming your timing marks are correct; Open the port for checking the timing on the bell housing. This is explained in the Haynes manual or other manuals. Loosen the bolt that clamps the Distributer in place and rotate the distributer to get the timing correct. You can get close by ear, but I wouldn't try to do it without a timing light.
