92 Caprice issues

My Caprice has a couple of issues with it, first off it doesn't seem to want to prime. I swapped out the fuel prime relay and checked all the fuses and they all looked good. I tried hooking a wire up to the jumper under the hood and it still doesn't seem to want to prime. Once I do get it running it runs fine.

The other issue is that none of my dummy lights come on when I start the car. Other then that all the gauges work fine.

Re: 92 Caprice issues

Sounds like a PCM fuse issue - check all of the fuses for the PCM (2 or 3), make sure none are blown. Sounds to me as though the engine is running off of the CALPAK rather than the ECM (the CALPAK is a backup method to ensure the injectors run in the absence of the computer).

Re: 92 Caprice issues

All the fuses looked good and the ECM is getting power. I checked that buy using a test light.

I finally got the pump to prime again by changing the oil, since I just recently bought the car.

Would I be able to use any ECM? Its a 9C1, but I didn't a bunch of civi ECMs on ebay but none of them have AYDN printed on the casing. Would it be posible to swap a chip over to the new ECM to get them working, or would any 350 computer work?

Re: 92 Caprice issues

I swapped out the ECM and still no dummy lights on the dash. Did 9C1's even come with any dummy lights, or am I chasing something that isn't even there?

Yes, they all have lights, but again - did you check the fuses? These are on the fusebox and if the fuses are blown, the new ECM isn't going to do diddly.

All the fuses are fine, I even swapped out the ones for the ECM with new ones.

Oh yeah I forgot to add, that the only one that was messes up was the DEFOG one which replaced too, since I'm trying to figure out the rear window defrost problem also.

Re: 92 Caprice issues

HAHAHHAHAAHAHA!!!!11!!!!one!!!1!!

I am the champion of my own domain! My FSM that I ordered from Ebay for $20 shipped came in yesterday. After looking through it, I saw that my dummy lights and my rear window defrost both tied into the number 17 fuse on the fuse panel. It looked good when I looked at it, so I just went ahead and changed it anyways and now it all works!!

woot!!

Re: 92 Caprice issues

Crap, it looks like I have a short in my rear window defrost since it pretty much melted the plastic on the number 15 fuse.

Re: 92 Caprice issues

we had much the same problem with the 91 caprice. a gm shop soaked us 500+$ and narowed to rear defog wiring and sent it out as unresolved? so we removed the spare tire and removed wire cover off the main wire harness that runs up and down on the left side of the trunk on the back side of the seat, this wire line is apx 1 1/2 inch in dia. i found that looked like a metal straight edge had shorted the wires due to a slight melt and burn on the outside of two of the wires (rear defrost wire) in this bundel. then it was onto the repair on the two wires and reprotect the wires and we have had no recurring problems. i think it may have been a shovel that cut into the wire in the first place.
