Mercedes Benz CLK DTM Original Teile

For those of you that have built this kit what color white did you use for the exterior? I went to my local hobby shop and tried to get AS-20 but was informed that you can't get the AS paints in the US. I bought the pure white color I think ts-26.

Hi Jedi,

AS-20 is called Insignia White. It is a warm brownie/gray off white, matt finish so it requires a clear coat for the Merc. You could probably mix someting similar up yourself. The TS-26 is definitely far too pure white straight from the can.

The good thing about the color "Insignia White" is that it's part of the Federal Standard of paint codes. Go to any good paint shop, and tell them you want a small batch of "FS 17875" (I think that's the code) and you'll get an exact color match of Insignia White. That is, if you have an airbrush, and I doubt you'll need more than an ounce or so.

*Edit* the correct code is 17875

Na... they have been making Mercedes-Benz motorcars for a lot longer so they get first dibs on the nick

Whatever, the Mercury (?) would probably look cool in Original-Teile livery anyway!

i thought the color was similar to US Navy Jets just a touch of grey in the white. I am planning on mixing White and Pewter Gray Krylon Acrylic enamel and airbrushing it.

Thanks for the help. HLJ has AS-20 so I am going to order a few things from them. I can always use my pure white for my Opel Astra kit.

Does anyone know where I can get some good reference photos?

Why not try the official DTM website? They have lots of pictures in their archive. Click on History in the top menu bar to get there.

Cheers,

Guido

Thanks I checked that site out and there were lots of good pictures there. Unfortunately I didn't see any of the engine bay or the interior.

OK, I didn't knew you were after those as well

Why don't you try KB Modelbau . This guy lives in Austria so if you understand German a bit that'll help ya.
Go to "Modellberichte" in the side bar.
Then go to the Mercedes Benz CLK DTM Team D2 "offene Version" page
Here you will find here building report mixed with reference photo's.

That guy did an awesome job

Wow thats a lot of carbon fibre.

Not sure If I have enough decal paper left.

That is a good site though. Exactly what I was looking for.

What is the best way to get a template for the carbon fiber decal? For the intake I took some masking tape and covered it. then cut to size. I then peeled it off and flattened it the best I coud to make the template. It worked OK but I had to doe the intake in two pieces.

www.scalemotorsport.com sells carbon fibre decal sheets, as do www.scaledreams.com, I think you may be able to get templated decals from Scale Motorsports too, you should have a look at their site, some really nice stuff.

yeah I bought a sheet of Scale Motorsports carbon fiber. It was a little exspensive. $8 for one sheet. They may have the templates I need though. I will check out their site.

**Edit**

Dammit. I just checked their site and they do have the patterns for both the Mercedes and Opel DTM cars. Now Im out another $40.

BTW they updated their site. It looks a lot better.
