96 blazer tranny problem

my friend has a 96 blazer runs great but wen he puts it in gear no reverse but he says he has all forword gears its a auto.
and wen he puts it in reverse it just rolls freely
could his shift linkage be off has any one had this problem thanks

If all other gears are working good and fluid level and filter are good it points to a internal transmission problem.
Stripped sun gear shell is one.

Any metal in pan?
How many miles on it?
Ever been serviced?
