Idiot Lights
Is there any way to convert the idiot lights to actual gauges in my 94 XJ?
And if so, what is the easiest way to go about it? It's a 1994 2.5L I-4 with the AX-5 tranny. (in case you needed to know) Thanks! |

Re: Idiot Lights
This is not necessarily for the faint of heart.....I did this to an '85 S10, converting the idiot light dash to a full factory gauge/tach setup. This was not a weekend project...it took me a number of days to get it worked out. Fortunately the S10 isn't my daily driver so it could sit for a few days with its dash ripped out.
First, you've got to like to accept challenges becasue this will most definitely be one. Second, you *will* need a factory service manual with the chassis and dash wiring diagrams. Third, you *will* need patience and perseverence to see you through the task. When I did my S10, I found that all the wiring was pretty much in place, it was just not in the right position in the large dash socket (that plugged into the gauge module). I also found I needed to add some jumpers to route power or a signal to a connection not used in the warning light setup. I had to run a wire in from the engine bay for the tach....fortunately the dash module came with the filter capacitor for the tach. The sending units for water temp and oil pressure will have to be swapped out as the orignal ones in your Jeep are simply switches (heat sensitive for the temp light and pressure sensitive for the oil pressure). The easiest way to go about it is with a nice aftermarket set of guages and a tach. Good luck Mike 00XJ |

Re: Idiot Lights
Recommend some aftermarket gages, like the hot rod people use.
All you need is oil pressure and coolant temperature. |

Re: Idiot Lights
Check this link out it will hopefully give you all the info you need to swap the gauge clusters.

Re: Idiot Lights
Hmm...
I'll see if I can get my greasy mitts on any smokin' aftermarket deals. I like the old school aircraft-looking gauges (I'm a little strange, sure). Mostly I want a tach, Though sometimes I think Chrysler left it off for a reason. I hate to think what RPM I run that poor thing sometimes... Thanks for the info! |

Re: Idiot Lights
