Vehicle information center issue

My VIC is bad. It goes out after running for a while and comes back on when it wants. Cleaned all contacts etc..no good.

So I went to the boneyard today. This is a 94 JGC 5.2L. I pulled one out of a 95, same two plug connector in back. tested it there and when powered on and reset it, a messages to check engine oil level was there. hmmm so I check and I was down about half a quart. Didnt seem like enough to matter but topped it off anyway. Same thing. Went back up into the boenyard and pulled another one, this time I found a 94 JGC like mine. Same thing. Very strange. I opened my owners manual and looked at the info that my VIC was supposed to supply and "Check Oil Level" was not one of them.

Anyone experience any issues like this when changing theirs out? The part numbers on the backs were different but this certainly has me scratching my head as well as the guy who owns the boneyard.

TIA

Re: Vehicle information center issue

On the passengerside of the OIL PAN there is a sensor which tells the VIC what the OIL Level is. Your jeep probably doesn't have the sensor - some did some didn't, I don't understand why they did that.

But if you do have the sensor, then you will need to test the sensor.

I don't know of any way to get rid of that feature in the VIC.

Re: Vehicle information center issue

Thanks. I had referred to my Haynes manual last night and saw the mention ofthe sensor in the oil pan. Went out to check mine and sure enough, dont have one! Yes it is very odd why some did and some didnt. Of course its making it hard for me to find the right VIC but at least now I know I can check the vehicle in the boneyard for that sensor before pulling the VIC.

Thanks for your reply.
