2001 Ford Escape EGR Valve Blew up

Yes, that's right Small blow up.... I went on the highway and Tried passing a Car and My Rev went up but I had no power to pass any cars, then I heard a hissing sound and slowly I lost more and more power, Then pop and the hiss got louder and lost all power. I opened the hood up and noticed that the Side of the EGR valve was blown.. I am puzzled. I don't know if it got chery hot and melted or there was just too much pressure. Has anyone else experienced this failure mode. What can cause the side of the EGR Valve to blow up like this. The Diaphragm appears to be working. I don't want to replace the EGR Valve unless I know what caused this. Any input would be appreciated/ Thanls

Re: 2001 Ford Escape EGR Valve Blew up

Hey, the same thing happen to me with my 2003 Escape on dec. 3rd. Mine started a fire in the egr valve and the egr tube. I'm being told by my dealer that this was due to the Cat. converter is plugged. Funny thing the engine light came on about 3 miles before everything blew up. My car is only 6k miles out of warrenty. And they are telling me they won't cover any of the repair under the warrenty.

The egr differential pressure solenoid is a known problem. I have had four, and it cause the check engine light.

My guess is that the egr valve failed and the excess pressure blew it up.
