Exclamation Driving 2,000 to AZ from MI...How can I get there SAFE?

I will be leaving to Arizona in two weeks. I will be starting in Michigan. I own a 98' escort. It has just hit 54,000 miles. What are some things to do for preventative maintenance? It has a new radiator, so the coolant system should be fine. Should I replace the 02 sensor? I have to pass an emissions test, so should i just go ahead and replace it? ALso, i was going to replace fuel filter. Also do a trans flush. Should I put some Rislone in the crankcase? Should I look at the cabin filter?

Welcome to AF!!

With 54K miles you shouldn't need too much. Change the oil, new air filter, new fuel filter, change the trans fluid and filter. Put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the tank and check the tires to make sure they are properly inflated and have good tread left.

As for the O2 sensors leave them alone. If the Check engine light is not on then you will be fine and shouldn't have any problem passing an emissions test.

Good luck and drive safely!!!!

Also, can anyone from Arizona give me any advice about car care in the desert, or about the emissions tests. TY.

32 PSI Cold should be max inflation pressure. Check the side of the tires for the max number. I don't live in the desert but maintenance should be the same as anywhere else. Oil changes, transmission service and etc. Of course cooling system maintenance is critcal since it will be taxed by the heat.

You would be wasting your money with a trans fluid change. Transmission fluid is a detergent and typically isnt changed until the car has 100k or more. There are some cars out there that have a "no change the fluid for life" in there tranny's. As for what you change? Change the oil, air filter if it needs it, fuel filter if it hasnt been done, and check the coolant. That all you need to worry about. I drove an 88 Sentra with a slipping clutch to Vegas and back 6 years ago, round trip miles was 2200. Good luck on your trip and remember, dont let anyone tell you to spend hundreds of bucks for stuff you dont need.
