98 Cavalier - Stalling, crank sensor, codes

Codes showing crank sensor malfunction
- we put in a new crank sensor but it made no difference, same problem

Car is running rough
- Stalling, RPM needle jumping up and down, lights on dash flickering on and off

All sensors replaced (at least once or twice)
New fuel pump
New injectors
EGR valve checked
Computer checked

We've put over $4,000 into this car and have been to many different mechanics, pretty desperate here

Please help :0

Re: 98 Cavalier - Stalling, crank sensor, codes

I do not know if this will help.
I have read on other boards (Club Cav) that when you replace the Crankshaft sensor the computer needs to be re-learned as to the new distance between the sensor and the crankshaft. It also stated it needs to be done with a Tech 1 or 2 scan tool.

Can you help me? I replaced a 1995 2.2 OHV engine with a 1998 2.2 OHV engine. The PCM is new, I have spark but the injectors are not firing. I went to replace the Crankshaft sensor and instead of having 2 wires (Purple & Yellow) as shown in the Chiltons book and online at ALLDATADIY it has 1 black wire. It is the Crankshaft sensor as I removed the old one and it matches the new one.

Do you know how many wires and what color were on your sensor.

Thank You.

Hey I am having the same problem with my 96 Z24 between 1000 and 3000 rpms there is a dead spot but if I floor it its fine. It coded that crank sensor as well just wondering if you have figured anything out?

Re: 98 Cavalier - Stalling, crank sensor, codes

Have either one of you tried to check the TPS (throttle position sensor). A friend of mine was having the same problem with his 98 cav 2.1. He checked the TPS and it had a dead spot in it and changed it. And it fixed the problem. hope it works for you guys too.
