91 LeBaron digital dash problems

Hello, I have a 1991 LeBaron with the digital dash gauges. The problem I am having is that the dash stays on even when I have the car turned off and the keys out of the ignition. The only way I can get the dash to turn off is to unplug the battery every time I am done using the car. Has anyone ever encountered a similar problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: 91 LeBaron digital dash problems

Yes, as a matter of fact, I have. I am actually in the process fo converting my Baron to the digital dash. Amidst the wiring and computer nightmares, I once witnessed the cluster staying on after I had turned the car off. I also had the engine keep running with the ignition off and the key out, but the dash cluster kept repeating the start up process that time. I was pretty sure this was a computer issue. I have an idea for a quick fix though, at a small sacrifice. Open up your dash (if you don't know how, ask), then take out your digital cluster. Find the postive wires going to it and cut the 2 wires, connect the 2 wires from the cluster side together, then connect them to the positive wire from the ignition. This way, you'll kill the power to the dash whenever your ignition turns off, and also when you are cranking the engine. That's the small sacrifice: the cluster will turn off when you are cranking your engine. I believe that this will not interfere with the trip odometers, I'm pretty sure they are stored on the body computer. Now, I have the wiring diagrams all over my room because I'm rewiring my Baron, so I can get you the wire colors if you want to do this. And you should either solder the wires or use crimp connectors, none of that ghetto twisting wires together then taping them. I still can't believe the guys at circuit city told me to do that with a custom radio.

Oh, and for maximum Baron enjoyment, I would recommend avoiding disconnecting the battery whenever possible, because the transmission computer has to relearn whenever you do. Unless you don't have the 4 speed automatic A604. But otherwise, for my Baron, it takes a week after disconnecting the battery to start shifting smoothly and accelerating normally again.

And I assume you have the coupe / covertible LeBaron?

My dash stays on for about 30 seconds after I stop and pull the key out, not sure if yours stays on perminantly or just for a while...

Re: 91 LeBaron digital dash problems

after I power off the car the dash stays off for about an hour, then just comes back on by itself, which eventually drains the battery. I used to have to unplug the battery every time I was done using the car, but now I just take out that fuse (#2). It's a bit easier than popping the hood every time, thanks for that. Though if there is a permanent solution then I would much rather go that route.
