Exclamation HELP PLEASE NISSAN AVenir

I have 1998 Avenir it smells real hot at the minute friend suggests thermostat I do not have $$ right now to have diagnosed can anyone help tell me how to rtoubleshoot step by jolly step or at least what to look for, this vehicle my only currently and as I am very remote (dweller) I need.

Would appreciate help and thoughts

Underneath the distributor just above where the gearbox is, you will see the bottom radiator hose. With the engine and coolant cold, undo the three bolts on the thermostat housing. Remove thermostat.

Put thermostat in a saucepan and ocver with water and confirm that the valve is closed. Bring the saucepan water to a boil and see if the valve opens. If not, then replace thermsost which are pretty cheap.
