1987 Jeep Cherokee Chief starting problem

Ok I have a 1987 Cherokee Chief it is 4x4. Just bought it and now i am having a problem with it. We i try to start it it wont start. it turns over slowly and acts like the battery is dead. Had the battey check out and it is good. Thinking either the starter or alternator? Not entirely sure. Doesnt seem it would be the alternator since the batter is charged. Also the ground wire is only connected to the block, there is another connector on the second ground wire but it is taped to the other ground wire. Where does that one go? Any help would be greatly appriciated. New to the jeep scene and dont know anything about them at all. Also what are good parts to keep around. We go off roading a lot and if the chance something breaks we want spare parts around here. thank you

Re: 1987 Jeep Cherokee Chief starting problem

Not exactly sure about that year and model but my 92 sport has a ground going to the block, another going to the fender well beside the battery, and a ground strap going from back of block to top middle of firewall. Your engine compartment should have the battery main cable grounded to block and tightly, grounded to chassis and the block grounded to chassis. Also you can try pulling the starter from the engine and hold on tightly and have a friend turn it over to see how well it spins. Also do you have spark and fuel at the engine as it might be turning over but just not firing.

What type motor does it have?

It could be the starter. This is sometimes an early sign of it going bad, but it could also be the battery cables based on the description you gave.
