'97 Jimmy problems.

A few months ago the power windows, anti-lock brakes, and blower motor all stopped working at the same time. Then a couple days later they all came back on. Then a couple days later they all went off again... and the cycle continued for a month or so.. now they aren't working at all, and it's been that way for several months.

A little bit ago I went into Schucks and borrowed their diagnostics tools to check on my car because my engine was misfiring. Turned out I just needed to replace spark plugs and wires, but it also came up my neutral safety starter switch was going out. I asked them if that was causing my electronics problems and the response was "Most likely." Well, I replaced that and to no suprise..stuff still didn't work.

I've checked connections several times. Under the hood and under the dash.. all my fuses are good etc..

There are 3 plugs I've noticed not connected to anything: One is under my dash next to the fuse box. It's a small plug with three leads...but there's no receptical for it to be seen. The second is again under my dash near the fuse box, a large receptical with maybe 8-10 leads but no connector to be seen. The third is under the hood connected to the battery..positive side I think..the main lead comes off and there's a little red wire that comes off that lead.. I think it used to be connected to the subwoofer wire that's also under the hood. But the sub and amp don't exist anymore.

Any help?

Not sure what those guys were telling you but, the neutral start switch has nothing to do with power windows, anti-lock brakes, or the blower motor. The ignition switch is a known problem on 1997 GM S & T body vehicles, and it will affect the things you mentioned.

Re: '97 Jimmy problems.

But would the ignition switch cause it to have worked, then not worked, then worked, etc? To me that sounds like something loose.

I wish I had money to just take it in and get it fixed...damn rent.

Re: '97 Jimmy problems.

The ignition switch feeds several different circuits through several different sets of contacts. If one of those contacts becomes loose or worn, everything on that circuit will only work when it makes good contact.

Re: '97 Jimmy problems.

How would I go about verifing or ruling out that it is the ignition switch?

The quickest, easiest way is to put a test light on the fuse for one of the things that fail. Then cycle the ignition switch several times verifying that the circuit powers up every time you cycle the switch.
