96 88ls 3.8 non supercharged stalls out

please help
car stalls all the time
fuel pressure 48 lbs at prime 38 lbs after starting
started out stalling around right turns when gas was low
then starting stalling going straight
ran better with more fuel in tank before but not now
advance comp check no codes
check engine light not on
runs better at night when cool outside
used to restart in neutral as I was coasting but now have to stop put in park and turn key on and off a few times
sometimes need to hit fuel filter a few times and it will go farther before stalling again
changed filter 4 times
cleaned fuel pressure regulator
i have terminal cancer and dont have much money to just start replacing expensive parts and need car to get to doctors

Welcome to AF!!

Change the crank position sensor. They will overheat and cause the car to stall. As soon as it cools down it will restart. That is why the car runs better and longer when it is cool outside. It usually will not set a light until the sensor is totally gone.

would the crank sensor make the fuel pressure drop to zero though when it stalled in garage idling with pressure gauage on it?

Hmm, my 94 does this same thing. Its a real hassle. It started out just like you said but a couple of weeks ago I was pulling 80mph down the freeway and it just died out of no-where.

Yes! Once the CPS stops sending the signal to the computer it will shut down and usually the fuel pressure will drop to zero until you try to restart the car. If you haven't changed the fuel pump relay you may want to try that too. Not very expensive and easy to get to. Also I don't think coils are your problem especially since the car runs alright until it stalls.

I changed the fuel pump relay and took off down the street and wow full power BUT that only lasted one time hitting the gas then back to the same thing. Do you know if I take it to the garage down the street and they put it on their diagnostic machine ( 60.00) will it pick up the CPS unit failing?

Re: 96 88ls 3.8 non supercharged stalls out

Chances are the scan will not pick up an intermittant CPS. The early signs of the sensor going bad it intermittant stalling. I know of a member with a fairly new Grand Am who had the GM techs stumped because they couldn't diagnose the problem. They replaced every sensor and the computer except for the CPS and the problem continued. I advised the member to have the CPS changed and the car ran like a top. The techs wanted to know where he got the information on this problem. So save the diagnostic fee and just have it replaced.

Re: 96 88ls 3.8 non supercharged stalls out

ok update on my stalling problem. I put in a new fuel pump / filter / plugs / wires / and yes a CPS / and I still have a problem however the symtoms have changed a little. First of a ll it still runs at night when it is cooler outside ( I live in florida) I now have better pickup but if I floor it it now goes (well how to say this ) like it is trying to take off but cuts out but the RPM'S are there ( its not going blaghhhhh ) like before. But in the daytime after awhile when it gets warmer it won't go past idle without cutting out but again does not feel like a fuel loss now but rather an electrical cut of some type ( damn I miss the old days of a set of points / resistor / coil and plugs ) you could change a motor tehn for what these electronics costs these days

if your showing rpm's but no or lack of power i assume you have a transmission failure. have it checked out.

autozone.com has pretty good infoon diagnosing the coils or do a search thru this forum. also have you checked your fuel pressure?
