I have a 1996 3000GT that I bought about two weeks ago. After getting all the state inspection and tags done I have been able to drive it since last Saturday. It was running great, no clutch problems or anything serious like that. But this morning I got in it to go to work and it would not go into first gear for anything. I tried letting it get nice and warmed up, nothing. I tried putting it in reverse (don't ask me why) to see what would happen and it started grinding gears. I was finally able to force it into first to pull out of my driveway. Once I got to a stop sign I tried to down shift into first again and it got stuck in neutral. I had to sit there for five minutes before it finally went into second (couldn't get it into first). I had to limp to work doing it that way. At one stop light the car just died like I wasn't using the clutch at all. I had to lift my foot up and punch down as hard as I could to get it to engage. Once I got into my work's driveway I tried to shift again and this time it was like the clutch wouldn't engage at all. I had it pushed all the way to the floor, but nothing worked. I am planning on checking out the clutch fluid level at lunch, but I wanted to get any opinions on what else it could be. It didn't show any symptoms last night around 9:30 when I got home (such as the clutch slipping and stuff like that). I know it might be the master and/or slave cylinders. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated as I don't know much at all about 3000GT's. The sooner the better too, as I don't have any other way to get home from work. And sorry for the long post, just wanted to make sure all the information I had was included. Thanks!

Re: Noobie Needs Help
wow.. what a wonderful first post! haha welcome to the forums it sounds to me like you are low on fluid maybe or you have air in the lines? check the level and blead the system and see if that helps.. also have you tried pumping the clutch to build pressure? just give that a shot also might help you at least get home

EDIT: I was also wondering which type of fluid to put in it. I know that you use brake fluid, but I have heard some people say DOT 3 and others DOT 4. Thanks again.

Re: Noobie Needs Help
Just wanted to let y'all know how it turned out. I got some DOT 4 fluid from work and checked the reservoir, and it was empty save for a tiny little bit in the bottom. I filled it up, pumped the clutch a little and turned the car on and pumped it some more. After about 5 minutes I could feel the clutch getting more pressure in it and decided to drive it a little. It now shifts smooth as glass. I really think the punk I bought it from drove it hard and didn't bother to do regular maintenance on it. I'm gonna leave a little cardboard under the car tonight to check for leaks, hopefully I don't have any. Thanks again for your quick help!

Re: Noobie Needs Help
So much for a happy ending. I started it up to head home after work and noticed that the clutch seemed to have the same problem. Once I pumped it a few times it seemed to get better, but that only lasted till I got home. As soon as I pulled into my driveway the thing started acting up again. I found that I have to push as hard as I can to get it all the way to the floorboard and it's still a little hard to get it into gear. It seemed to help if I pumped the clutch a few times, but that was probably my imagination. I remember reading that the clutch pedals are adjustable on these cars, and I saw a link in another post that shows you where the bolt is that allows you to do that. My question is this: how difficult/time consuming is this procedure? Cause if I go to my car tomorrow and try to get it to work properly and it does the same thing it would be nice if I could just go under there and loosen the bolt, move the pedal to the desired location, and tighten the bolt back up. But something tells me it's not that simple. So again, is it something that can be done in a relatively short period of time, or do I need to bleed the system and then adjust it and then put it all back together again?

Re: Noobie Needs Help
adjusting the pedal is fairly easy...but i would say check for leaks first.

Re: Noobie Needs Help
Does not sound like an adjustment issue. Sounds like you have a leak in either your clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, or the line in between. Pull the boot back on the slave to check for fluid, check near the pedals for wetness from a master cylinder leak, and check the line for wetness. Defintely doesn't sound like you need to adjust anything. Regular maintenance does not include filling the clutch fluid, it should never go down.
Once you find the leak and replace the part, you will need to bleed the system.
