Hey guys, my car has 290,996 miles on the engine and its smoking from the tailpipe from reading other posts I found out that my rings are bad. So my question is it worth it to replace the rings and how much will that cost. Can I do it on a weekend or should I look for another option. With that many miles on the car I’m not sure if it’s worth fixing or drive it till it dies and then get something new. What do you all think? Thanks

Re: Fix it or not?
what year? make model?..doesnt really matter cuz if its a d series which it most likely is..then get on ebay buy a new ring kit..its relatively easy to replace just do some research. or just run it till it dies and find another motor at a junkyard..might as well keep it cheap..

Re: Fix it or not?
seriously, you can find decent D-series engines w/ light mileage on them, b/c the OBD2 D-series engine still bolts right in, and all you have to do is use your mounts, your intake, and depending on what model you have, your exhaust manifold.. you can run your same wiring harness, but you may have to change some plugs/sensors on the engine for the ones off your old one.
If you wanna rebuild it, (useless, most of the time), you can get a master rebuild kit for around $250, which comes w/ new rings, bearings, pistons, wrist pins, seals, and some other goodies, depending on where you get it from.. and if you DO rebuild it, do yourself a favor, and get a Helm's manual.. even if you're just going to change the engine. In your first rebuild, STICK TO THE FACTORY SPECS, THEY'RE JUST FINE FOR DAILY DRIVERS. (Clearances, etc.) |
