Shell/Dunlop Porsche 962C - My First Model!
I thought I would show everyone pictures of my first "serious" model, a Tamiya Porsche 962C. I stumbled acrossed this on eBay and purchased it for the grand sum of $10 USD, including shipping.
A few things about the kit: I am very disappointed at the lack of detail. It comes with all of 37 parts, not including the body, tires and decals. Also, I don't know who decided to mould the windows and headlight covers to the body, but thanks a lot buddy! There are a few good things about the kit though, such as the nice masks Tamiya provided for the complicated paint scheme, and the very nice Cartograf decals. Overall I am pleased with it. I made quite a few mistakes and the Testors enamel paint took forever to dry and left some mild orange peel. The decaling was quite a challenge, especially the black top and all those white stripes. But the Cartograf decals are super tough and with lots of Microsol I managed to make it work. Anyway, sorry about the essay. I will shut up now. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

If you want more detail "zilla, try the Tamiya 956 model...that has an engine and would be a good next kit to try.

Re: Shell/Dunlop Porsche 962C - My First Model!
Nice work, good looking build.
The molded in windows come from the fact that the body was originally made for Tamiya's line of 1/24 R/C cars in the late 80's- so it was made more for strength than detail. Tamiya released the 962 as a 'static' kit almost as an afterthought. At least they put some good decals in the rerelease. The 956 is a terrific kit. it will take all the superdetailing that you could ever dream of putting into a 1/24 build, and there's a rather good amount of reference material available for it. But it's gotten rather rare again, even after it's rerelease in '03. Actually, it'd be kind of a shame to use it as a second build- save it for when you're really ready to go all out on a detailing project.

Re: Shell/Dunlop Porsche 962C - My First Model!
I agree, I have many kits I really like that I'm holding off on building until I get better. I'm currently working on a Williams FW13B and I'm trying CF decals, BMF and maybe some wiring.

Excellent first build! (better than mine
)Reading between the lines in your post, it sounds to me like you have the modeling bug ![]() One thing, make your photos less grainy - your work deserves better IMHO

Re: Shell/Dunlop Porsche 962C - My First Model!
Yeah, I need a better camera.
Right now I have a cheapo Powershot A400. I don't know why it turned out so grainy. The pictures usually turn out decent. And yes, I caught the bug big time. I have about 15 kits in my to-do pile, and a few more I'm bidding on eBay. Before I discovered this site, I was happily building my OOB kits. Then I saw everyone elses super detailed builds and I feel inadequate. Now I have the need to go out and buy all these CF and PE parts. I hate you guys.
