How to paint your car for $75.00 - No kidding
I recently just finished painting my car myself, at home, in my driveway.
I used a foam brush and some Rustoleum from Home Depot... No, really. Total cost of the project was $74.74 and it took about 10 days of my time. The final result is amazing to say the least. Dont get me wrong, it is not perfect, but for $74.74 I would say it is a damn good job. What do you think? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here is a link to the write up on how I did it: Styluss Customs - Poor Man's Paint Job I know some of you may have seen the $50 Paint Job out there, this is different. Yes, it uses some of the same principles, but an entirely different technique to help eliminate the need for excessive sanding. What you see here is NOT sanded and NOT polished in any way. I simply let the paint dry, washed it and waxed it. I figured some of you might want to throw a coat or 2 on your rides. It really is an easy, inexpensive way to bring some new life back to your car!!

A method very similar to this is in this month's Hot Rod Magazine...

I am blown away. Your car looks amazing for that amount of money. What was the condition of the body before you started? Was there a lot of sanding and body work involved?

Re: How to paint your car for $75.00 - No kidding
Well, the body was actually just fine before I started. The paint however was not. All I did was wet sand the paint down with 600 grit paper before I started. Then I laid on 3 coats of paint and wet sanded again. Then 3 more coats, let it dry and wash and wax... done.

If you use very light colors this should come out good . I would not try black. very good job on applying paint evenly.how much did you thin the paint before applying. Did you use any primer ? I have used this paint on my patio furniture with good results and durability.

I did not use any primer, except for some small areas on the trunk lid where the paint had come off down to the bare metal.
And as for thinning... I used a mix of about half and half paint to mineral spirits.

Real good job. Nice solid color. Would blue be to dark to work with? How durable is it?

People say the white hides a lot of the "mistakes", but I could see doing this with any of the colors Rustoleum offers and having no issue. Even if you do get some stroke lines, so what? It is a great solution to a poor looking car in my opinion.

Looks Good ! I used the same on mine. My 92 had alot of bobywork. I ended up primering the whole car. The primer seems to have helped the paint to stick to the bumpers and moldings. My paint has been on for almost a year now and still shines.

I totally taped off the areas I did not want to get paint on. It was very easy and did not take much time at all.
