Gas gage not reading properly

Hi I have a 99 GA GT and the gas gage won't tell me the correct amount of gas in the tank. Sometimes it will read correctly when I first turn it on but as I drive it goes up to full. It will also drop down to E and ding when I sit at a light for too long. But as soon as I move I goes back up to full. Any ideas on what's going on would be much appreciated.

Re: Gas gage not reading properly

I think the usual culprit is sending unit, could also be wiring problem (corroded or whatever)

Re: Gas gage not reading properly

yeah these are all defective sending units in the tank, think it was 99-00, maybe even the early 2001's.

The new ones are made with the proper metals and shouldnt give you any trouble .

Re: Gas gage not reading properly

So I'm guessing the solution would be a difficult thing to do on my own.

Re: Gas gage not reading properly

Not realy, you just drop the tank.
Disconect the wire harness and fuel lines.

Undo the retainer on the pump/level sending unit and it pulls right out.

My SE has dont this for a long time.
I was waiting until my fuel pump dies to change the level sender, but I dont think its going to die......

The only hard/bad part is if the tank if full, I'd run it as low as possible.
Use a floor jack with a large board to support the tank if its full/heavy.
