Cam Synchronizer Removal Question

I have a question concerning the removal of the Cam Synchronizer (see attached). There seems to be what looks like gasket material that actually sits on top of the Synchronizer flange. Will this cause a problem when pulling the faulty synchronizer?

What year is your Taurus and which engine does it have?

I own a white 2003 Ford Taurus (my 3rd Taurus). It has a 3.0 V6 Vulcan engine. Taurus stands for:

I love the Ford Taurus. Not some repackaged 500 now called a Taurus. All of Taurus(s) have made a decent mechanic out of me. I hope that you will be able to help me with my question.

Unfortunately the Ford factory service manual doesn't describe if there is a gasket or not. Following are the steps per the factory service manual:

1. CAUTION: Do not turn the crankshaft or the camshaft during the removal and installation procedure or the fuel system timing will be out of time with the engine and possibly cause engine damage.
2. Rotate the crankshaft until the No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of the compression stroke and the TDC mark lines up with the timing mark.
3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 .
4. Remove the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. For additional information, refer to Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor—3.0L (2V) in this section.
5. Remove the camshaft synchronizer bolt.
6. NOTE: The oil pump driveshaft might come out with the camshaft synchronizer. If so, retrieve the oil pump drive shaft before proceeding.
7. Remove the camshaft synchronizer.

Installation

1. CAUTION: Do not turn the crankshaft or the camshaft during the removal and installation procedure or the fuel system timing will be out of time with the engine and possibly cause engine damage. A special tool must be used during the installation of the replacement synchronizer assembly. Failure to follow this procedure will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. It is very important to coat the gear on the camshaft synchronizer with clean engine oil prior to installation. Failure to do so could result in gear failure.
2. Install the special tool on the camshaft synchronizer by rotating the tool until it engages the notch in the camshaft synchronizer housing and the armature.
3. NOTE: During installation, the arrow on the special tool will rotate clockwise until oil pump intermediate shaft and camshaft gear engages.
4. Install the camshaft synchronizer housing assembly so the arrow on the special tool is 38 degrees from the centerline of the engine.
5. Install the camshaft synchronizer bolt.
6. Install the CMP sensor. For additional information, refer to Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor—3.0L (2V) in this section.
7. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 .
