Jury-rig to fix Passlock

New here so please excuse if this is an old discussion.

Like many others on here I am having trouble starting my 1998 Grand Am. When I turn the key to on, all idiot lights come on as normal, most shut down as you turn the key to start position, also normal. That is all that happens though, the stater does not turn. If I go underhood and cross the solenoid, the starter will spin fine, and the first time it acually started the car for about 30 seconds or so, probably off residual fuel pressure because it han't run since. This car was working aces previous to this, I think I set off the passlock when I was trying my new multimeter in the cigarette lighter; the car wouldn't turn over the next morning.

I have tried the reset procedure several times with no results, using both 10 minute intervals and longer. I have also just tried cutting the yellow wire that runs from the tumbler assm. also without results, so I tried the reset again afterwards just in case, nothing.

My question is, where is the best place to energize the fuel pump from. I am thinking that I could jump a wire from a keyed on fuse to the fuel pump fuse underhood, but that won't work if the passlock is stopping power to the pump after the fuse and not before. The other option I'm thinking of is to use a scotchlock in the fuelpump harness, I just don't know where the easiest spot to get at is, or what wire is the hot one. Getting under the car is not impossible but inconveniant.

Any thoughts or help are appreciated

Re: Jury-rig to fix Passlock

Welcome to AF.

This is the wrong section for your "jerry riggin".

its being moved to the grand am forums!

The only REAL fix is to replace the part thats causing your passlock issues. Either the Lock cylinder or the ignition switch is usually the pronlem.

Also jumping the starter solenoid isnt good either.
You can burn up fused links in the starting & charging system.
And since you already cut the yello wire.....

Check out this thread for a passlock disable link, if youre going to do it do it right.

Re: Jury-rig to fix Passlock

Its not worth putting a $300 part on a thousand dollar car, this is just a winter beater so any jury-rigging ( proper term) will do. I realize that bypassing Passlock is pain in the ass so I just want to hotwire the fuel pump, duct tape or baling wire solutions are acceptable

Re: Jury-rig to fix Passlock

Have you determined if your problem is the ignition switch or the lock cylinder or both? The ignition switch is only about $30 or so at Autozone. It's the lock cylinder that's the killer, as it's about $200. Incidentally, I recently bought both the lock cylinder and ignition switch for about $50 for my son's 96 Cavalier at a local auto salvage/junk yard.

Re: Jury-rig to fix Passlock

Well chromezeus, if you are realy going to bypass this then check that link above I posted.
Also this link has the test proceedures, should help identify whats realy wrong.
Ignition switch-Lock Cylinder check/replace

This is a good place to find OEM prices for parts .
(though I wouldnt buy from them, cheaper else where (when available))

let us know how it goes and Good Luck !

<edit>
Ok that bypass link is dead.....
I'll see if I can locate a bypass proceedure.
