P0171 and P0174

I have a 2000 Duratec that started throwing these codes.

P0171 bank 1 Lean
P0174 Bank 2 Lean

Symptons are rough idle at startup and lower gas mileage

Unmetered air is getting in the engine causing the code to come on

I had these codes and started going through the archives of another forum I frequent.

People were replacing MAFs, Fuel Injectors everything trying to remedy this to no avail.

I finally found a common fix that people eventually got to after spending money on things they didn't need to.

The pictured hose starts to deteriorate and develops a hole and collapes.
It pulls in unmetered air and the PCV Valve starts spitting oil out.

This $21.xx Dealer Hose assy,Cheaper on line if you look, and a PCV Valve fixes the problem.
I didn't take pictures of my old assy but here is the new assy.

Certain Parts stores have this PCV listed incorrectly. This is the correct one. The cars that have EATC(automatic Climate control) use a different PCV but I didn't do research into what the part number is for it.

Some people may be able to get to it without pulling the upper Intake manifold but I couldn't, and I am a fairly Decent wrench. You can get to just the elbow without removing the intake but you will only fix part of the problem. The rubber hose that actually connects to the PCV deteriorates as well.

Pull the upper intake and then remove 4 bolts that hold the chrome Fuel Rail on to gain access to the PCV valve and then twist it counter clockwise to get it to release.

Replace the hose assy and put the upper intake manifold.

takes about 1.5 hours.

Correct PCV valve is EV-243
Hose assy is YF1Z-6A664-AB

Do this and your car will once again idle smoothly
and the codes will not return
