oil question

Hello everyone,

I would like to start doing my own oil changes for my 1995 Mazda 3, since every time I go to my dealer I always spent over 2 hours waiting for them to do it. Anyway, would anyone know if the oil used in mazda is synthetic or not. The only information I could find about the type of oil recommended for this car was in the owners manual which recomends 5W-20 and nothing else. When I was buying this car I remember one of the mechanics at my dealer informed me that the Mazda 3 and 6 comes with synthetic oil, but reading some of the other posts it seems it is not the case. The car has over 65,000 miles and I do not want to put regular oil if in fact I should use synthetic. Thanks for your help

Re: oil question

The spec is 5w20 and around here I believe the dealership uses Motorcraft (ford) 5w20. Most if not all 5w20 is semi synthetic in my experience whether it's listed as such or not. As far as synthetic oil being a problem, I have to disagree. I work as a automotive technician and everyone in the shop other than the apprentice (the one who is still takes 3 hours to do a set of brakes) uses synthetic in their vehicles. A quality synthetic breaks down slower, flows better when cold and is an all around superior lubricant.

Re: oil question

Yes fully synthetic oils are widely accepted as preferred these days, look at the recommended service intervals for oil changes from the big manufacturers, they are way longer than they used to be, and they all use fully synthetic.
