check engine light

yesterday i drove my 90 GM around town and it was sputtering and spitting. just not runnin real good. picked up my kids and all of a sudden the check engine light came on. so i brought it back home and on the way i just flat out firewalled it. light went out and never came back. any ideas??? i changed the fuel filter today adn it seems to be running better. would a clogged fuel filter cause a check engine light???? any ideas otherwise???

*edited for adding the year*

Re: check engine light

If it is a 96 or newer, the code is stored in the PCM. have the code read at a major auto parts chain store.(Autozone--Pep Boys) Then post the EXACT code number back here and we can guide you through diagnosis.
