clutch? or tranny?
First off I have to start of by saying I'm pissed off to no end right now. I'm absolutely livid to the point of tears.
A few weeks ago I got my cv joint replaced to the tune of $170. That had to be done twice cause the first time on the way to work, the cvjoint just came out from the transmission. Missed a half day of work. Earlier this week my clutch went. I'll admit I was pushing it. I know it was going to need replacing and had been watching the clutch fluid very carefully. In any case, I spent $330 yesterday to have the clutch master cylinder and clutch slave cylinder replaced. This was yesterday, Thursday morning, 30 hours ago. Drove it to work, home, work and home today....with a problem. Keep in mind this mechanic has had his shop in the same location for at least the 10 years I've known him. He's worked on various cars of mine in the past and I trust him. After picking up my car and driving home from work yesterday, I called him cause I felt the clutch was a little "stiff", even though I'm driving on a newly repaired clutch system, but it just didnt feel right. He assured me that's normal and that's how it should be, reminding me I had been on a bad clutch. I mentioned how the tranny engages almost when the pedal is like 80% up. Well today it's like the transmission doesnt thing i'm letting off the clutch, like 95% off the pedal. It's like when you "ride the clutch" a little bit when you try to give it gas, it gets alittle bit of power but not full power and revvs real high. It was only noticeable between 1st and 2nd. When I was in third and tried to "speed up", it does it then too. I'm almost a basketcase for the simple fact that I went thru this same crap with a car at the same exact time last year. And it was the damn transmission then. I hope it's not the transmission now. If it's the cvjoint again i'm going to come unglued. any ideas? 95 civic dx manual 5speed |

Re: clutch? or tranny?
To me it doesn't sound like a transmission problem; I'd assume you'd here some grinding if it was (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Maybe try having someone try helping you bleed the clutch pedal. Slowly pump it 3-4 times, hold it down hard, and have the other person loosen the nut on the slave cylinder (10mm I believe). Or you could do the hose & glass jar thing (fill the glass jar up enough and let the hose sit below the fluid level, and pump away). It's possible that you didn't break in the clutch properly and it's now glazed over (highly doubt that could happen in a day or 2).
Those are the only things I can think of. But I hope you didn't pay to have the cv joint the 2nd time around, that's most likely installation error. If that ends up being the problem again, don't pay a dime. Sorry I'm probably not much help, hopefully someone else will be. |

Re: clutch? or tranny?
yea, the feedback i'm getting may be the clutch. they didnt do something right. i think they did it too tight because i feel like it's too tight. I've driven sticks since I was 16 and i'm....a bit older now
and i've never had a clutch that stuff before.

Re: clutch? or tranny?
you could try adjusting your clutch cable..it might not be loose enough

Re: clutch? or tranny?
I just got back from the mechanic. He says it's the clutch itself starting to go. There's something in the slave cylinder that engages and self-adjusts with the clutch and when the clutch warms up from the pressure or something. I did notice the problem after driving for a while, I was almost home when it started happening. Friday traffic, stop and go on the clutch. He noted that I got a couple of months with that so long as I am easy on the foot, which I usually am. So I may either start working my shift earlier to beat the traffic or carpool. He noted the cost parts and labor about $500
What do you think? |

Re: clutch? or tranny?
I'm a little confused. Did you get the clutch replaced this week, or just the slave & master cylinder? Because if you did get the clutch replaced, it should last more than a few months. I bought my car (used) about 3 years ago, and it's still on the same clutch it came with. The clutch is really bad, from trying to do burnouts
and bumper to bumper traffic, but it still works (just slips a little).

Re: clutch? or tranny?
i got the slave and master cylinder replaced. he didnt touch the clutch. but now he says that's going, or rather it's pretty much gone. he said I had a couple of months. I cant drive it 2 miles from home before it starts "slipping", and it's been parked since the weekend. maybe he meant to say a couple more DAYS. when he did the cylinders he swore all was well but now i feel a bit cheated. I dont have $500 more for another month at least.
i'm pretty much screwed |
