Collapsed Valve Lifter

I have a friend with a 1992 Crown Victoria with a 4.6L V8 engine and it was making a distinct noise and i had it checked out today and it was diagnosed with a collapsed valve lifter, they people told me that maintenance would be between 250 - 500 dollars and i was just wondering what may have caused this to happen and how much labor will actually be because the piece is only 12 dollars itself...please help!...lol

Re: Collapsed Valve Lifter

you have to know which lifter is bad? did it damage the cam? you would need an intake gasket set and if it got the cam you would need a cam, lifter, rockers push rods and a front cover gasket set and you might as well throw in some new timing gears...

how many miles?

whats the oil pressure?

is the car in good shape?

i have a truck with 200k on the clock and its had a lifter tick for 160k of those miles...
